Outstanding sports car road. Motorbike equally rewarding - the final hairpins are as good as anything in Victoria. Road gate at Mirimbah is closed May to October during snow season.

Scored 7.6/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for sports car drivers.

The road

The Mount Buller access road is the most recognisable hill climb in Victorian driving. Starting from the resort gate at Mirimbah, the sealed mountain road gains nearly 1,000 metres in 16 kilometres using a series of carefully graded switchbacks and exposed ridge traverses. The climb has been a fixture of tarmac rally events since Targa High Country began in 2010, with the Mirimbah stage run multiple times across each event weekend. The lower section is tight and forested, with limited visibility into the corners. The mid-section breaks out of the trees onto exposed alpine terrain, the road narrowing against the mountainside with drops on one side and rock walls on the other. Hell Corner at 15 kilometres is the steepest section at roughly 13 percent gradient. The final approach to the village uses three hairpins in quick succession to gain the last 150 metres. The cycling community knows this climb well - it is one of the 7 Peaks series - and the road surface is maintained to a high standard year-round.
