Terms of Service
Last updated: 15 April 2026
1. Agreement
By using Contour (the app or website at contourapp.com), you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use Contour. These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia.
2. What Contour is
Contour helps you find roads worth driving. It scores roads by quality factors (curviness, surface, elevation, traffic, speed limit, road class) and routes you through better ones. Navigation is handed off to Google Maps.
Contour is a planning and discovery tool. It is not a replacement for Google Maps, a safety system, or emergency navigation. Always follow road rules, posted signs, and conditions on the ground.
3. Road data accuracy
Road data is sourced from OpenStreetMap (ODbL licence), NASA SRTM elevation data, and ACMA mobile coverage data (advisory only). Scores are computed by algorithm and may not reflect current conditions. Contour does not guarantee that:
- Roads are open, passable, or safe at the time of your trip
- Surface conditions match the score (surfaces change, roads are resurfaced)
- Mobile coverage classifications are accurate in remote areas
- 4WD track difficulty ratings reflect current seasonal conditions
Before driving any 4WD track, check current conditions with land managers and travel with appropriate equipment, communications, and recovery gear. Do not rely solely on Contour's Recovery Risk rating.
4. Your account
You must provide a valid email address to create an account. You are responsible for all activity under your account. Keep your sign-in link confidential.
We may suspend or close accounts that breach these terms, abuse the rate limits, or submit false condition reports.
5. Free and Pro tiers
Free tier
10 route searches per calendar month. Journey Builder, Discover Mode, and Field Notes are free. No credit card required.
Pro tier - from $5/month AUD (billed annually) or $8/month
Unlimited route searches, full drive history, priority support. Billed monthly or annually. Cancel anytime.
6. Payments and refunds
Payments are processed by Stripe. Subscriptions renew monthly unless cancelled before the renewal date. Refunds are handled case by case - email support@contourmaps.app. Australian Consumer Law rights apply and are not excluded by these terms.
7. Contributor content licence
When you submit anything to Contour - including drive stories, photos, videos, audio, recorded GPS tracks, drive logs, condition reports, ratings, reviews, route submissions, waypoints, saved places, comments, or any other text, image, audio, or location data ("Contributor Content") - you grant Digital Engineering Australia Pty Ltd a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, fully paid, transferable, and sublicensable (through multiple tiers) licence to use, reproduce, store, host, publish, create derivative works from, distribute, publicly display, transmit, make available, modify, adapt, process, index, analyse, commercialise, and sublicence the Contributor Content for any purpose connected with operating, improving, promoting, or commercialising Contour and its services.
This licence is necessary so we can show your Contributor Content to other users, build derivative datasets (such as road quality scores, condition forecasts, and aggregated analytics), and licence those datasets commercially. The licence is irrevocable - you cannot withdraw the rights granted in respect of Contributor Content already submitted.
Moral rights. To the extent permitted by law, you consent to any act or omission by Contour or its sublicensees that would otherwise infringe your moral rights in the Contributor Content.
Your warranties. By submitting Contributor Content, you warrant that:
- You created the content yourself, or you hold all rights necessary to grant the licence above
- You had lawful access to all locations where the content was captured
- The content does not contain identifiable faces or vehicle plates that you have not consented to publish
- The content does not contain audio recordings of private conversations
- You hold any required permits for footage captured in national parks, state forests, or on private land
- The content does not depict defence facilities or other locations where photography is restricted by law
- The content is not false, misleading, defamatory, offensive, or unlawful
- The content complies with all applicable Australian and state laws
Indemnity. You agree to indemnify Contour against losses, costs, or claims arising directly from your breach of these contributor terms.
Removal. We may remove, edit, or refuse to publish any Contributor Content at any time and for any reason.
Changes to these contributor terms. We will give 30 days' notice by email before any material change to these contributor terms takes effect.
8. Intellectual property
The Contour name, logo, road scoring algorithm, and app are our intellectual property. Road data is from OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL) and NASA SRTM. You may not scrape, copy, or redistribute Contour's scored road data without permission.
9. Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by Australian law, Contour is not liable for:
- Any accident, injury, vehicle damage, or loss arising from use of our route suggestions
- Inaccurate road scores or conditions
- Service interruptions or data loss
Nothing in these terms excludes rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law.
10. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. Continued use after the updated date constitutes acceptance. Significant changes will be notified by email.
