How Contour scores
for sports cars

Multiple intelligence signals. Roads that fail surface or speed limit thresholds are removed from the candidate pool entirely.

Curviness
CurvinessPrimary

How much the road bends per kilometre. Straight roads don't make the cut. Corners are what the sports car profile optimises for.

Surface quality
Surface quality

Smooth sealed tarmac scores highest. Rough or corrugated surfaces are penalised. For low-clearance cars, surface quality matters as much as curviness.

Speed limit
Speed limit

The right range: fast enough to be engaging, low enough to reward the corners. Urban streets and motorways score lower.

Traffic
Traffic

Low traffic roads are preferred. Clear corners are the point. A beautiful road with constant oncoming traffic isn't the same road.

Road class
Road class

Regional and local roads score highest. Residential connectors are excluded. Motorways and freeways score near zero.

Elevation
Elevation

Moderate elevation adds interest. Steep grades aren't penalised for sports cars - hills mean corners.

Why this profile

Corners first.

The sports car profile weights curviness higher than any other factor. Surface quality second. Motorways and highways excluded entirely. What's left is the roads your car was built for.

What scores mean

RQS 7+ is a great road. 8+ is exceptional. The top roads in Victoria consistently score 8.5-9.2. Anything below 6 is passable but not memorable.

Filter logic

What gets removed

Contour doesn't just score roads. It removes the ones that have no business being in a driving route.

Freeways and motorways
Speed limits above 110 km/h
Poor or unsealed surfaces
High-traffic urban arterials
Dual carriageway bypasses
Road intelligence

More than a score.

The quality score tells you if a road is worth driving. The intelligence behind it tells you if it's safe, current, and right for today.

Crash risk screening

We validate scores against 13 years of state crash records. The roads Contour scores highest are statistically safer per kilometre. Roads where the geometry doesn't match the speed limit are flagged.

Live conditions

Condition reports from other drivers. Surface state, hazards, recent changes. Data expires so you're never relying on old information.

40+ signals per road

Curvature, surface, speed environment, crash history, conditions, coverage - every 500 metres scored independently from satellite data, government sources, and other drivers.

FAQ

Common questions

Is it different from ROADS by Porsche?

Yes. ROADS is a curated directory - human-selected roads with photos. Contour is algorithmic - every sealed road in Australia scored 0-10 based on surface, curvature, gradient, and traffic. ROADS shows you 50 hand-picked roads. Contour scores 300,000+ segments and finds the best route between any two points.

Does it work for supercars?

Yes. The sports car profile prioritises smooth sealed surface above all else, which suits low-clearance cars. If your car can't handle speed humps, avoid residential connector roads - Contour routes through them occasionally on short legs.

What's a good score for a sports car?

RQS 7+ is a great road. 8+ is exceptional. The top roads in Victoria (Black Spur, Great Ocean Road connectors, alpine passes) consistently score 8.5-9.2. Anything below 6 is passable but not memorable.

Can I use it for track day approach roads?

Yes - enter your track as the destination and select the Sports Car profile. Contour will route you through the best roads on the way there.

Does it avoid highways?

Yes. The algorithm penalises long straight sections and high-traffic roads. You'll rarely see a freeway in a Contour sports car route unless it's the only connection between two regions.

Which states have the best roads for a sports car?

Victoria leads - the Yarra Ranges, Alpine High Country, and Great Ocean Road corridor. NSW has the Blue Mountains and the northern tablelands (Waterfall Way, Oxley Highway). Tasmania is exceptional for its size - low traffic everywhere and tight mountain passes. WA's Margaret River region is underrated, especially Caves Road.

How does the Google Maps handoff work?

Contour builds your route and adds the top-scoring roads as intermediate waypoints. The plan page shows a preview - which roads you're getting, their scores, and the total extra time. One tap opens Google Maps with the full route pre-loaded. Every waypoint is already set. You navigate from there.

What time of year is best for sports car roads?

Late spring through autumn (October to April) for alpine roads in Victoria and NSW - snow closes many High Country passes from June to September. Year-round for coastal roads like the Great Ocean Road. Check VicRoads or Live Traffic NSW for seasonal closures before heading into the hills.
