Exceptional sports car and motorbike road. The 48-kilometre length demands concentration and braking discipline. Not for winter driving - the road is closed in snow conditions.
Scored 5.4/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for sports car drivers.
The road
The Jamieson stage is the centrepiece of the Victorian Alpine collection and the longest single stage in Targa High Country. The 48-kilometre Eildon-Jamieson Road skirts the southern boundary of Lake Eildon National Park through steep, forested hill country with the lake appearing at intervals below. The road character is relentless - corner after corner for 48 kilometres with only a couple of faster straight sections in the middle to reset. The Targa event runs the stage in both directions across the weekend, and the return from Jamieson back to Eildon is a different experience entirely. The road surface is good sealed bitumen throughout, maintained to a standard that rewards committed driving. Jamieson itself is a small historic gold mining town at the junction of the Jamieson and Goulburn rivers. The Jamieson Arms Hotel has operated since the 1860s gold rush and is the natural stop after the stage.

Why this road

The region
The Eildon-Jamieson Road connects the towns of Eildon and Jamieson through the southern edge of Lake Eildon National Park. Lake Eildon is the largest reservoir in Victoria by capacity. Jamieson was settled for gold mining in the 1860s and retains its historic character with a pub, a general store, and mine workings visible in the surrounding hills.

History
The Eildon-Jamieson Road has been a fixture of Targa High Country since the event began in 2005. At 48 kilometres, it is consistently the longest single stage in the event and often decisive for class results.
Before you go
Fuel in Eildon before departure. Jamieson has fuel and meals at the hotel. The road is sealed throughout but winding and demanding - allow at least an hour. Closed in snow conditions during winter.
