The road

The Mansfield to Bonnie Doon road follows the Maroondah Highway (B320) west through farmland and state forest, offering a different character to the mountain stages in the Victorian Alpine collection. The 31-kilometre route is faster and more open, built on the gently rolling country that separates the Alps from the Midlands. The lake makes several appearances throughout the stage, glimpsed through timber and across paddocks. The Howqua Hills section in the middle of the route is the technical highlight - a series of medium-radius bends through state forest that rewards consistency. Bonnie Doon, at the end of the stage, gained national fame from the film The Castle and has embraced its status as a destination for road trippers.
