Outstanding sports car and motorbike stage. The road narrows and the forest deepens as the distance from Geeveston increases.

Scored 8.5/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for sports car drivers.

The road

The best stage in the Wrest Point collection. The 22-kilometre run from Geeveston to the Tahune Airwalk follows the Huon and Picton Rivers through forest country that becomes wilder and more remote as the road narrows. The stage ends at one of Tasmania's best-known tourist attractions - a 620-metre canopy walk over the Huon River - but the road to get there is the real reason to come. The river crossings, the ancient Huon pine stands visible from the road, and the forest closing in as the distance from Geeveston increases make this the most atmospheric stage in the southern Tasmania events.

The best stage in the Wrest Point collection.

The region

The Tahune Forest Reserve protects one of the last significant stands of Huon pine in Tasmania. The Huon pine is one of the oldest living organisms on Earth - individual specimens can live for thousands of years and the grove at Tahune contains trees that were ancient when European settlement began. The Airwalk was built in 2001.

History

The Tahune Forest was the subject of a major environmental controversy in the 1990s when logging operations were proposed for the reserve. Conservation campaigns led to the establishment of a protected zone around the Huon pine stands.

Before you go

Fuel in Geeveston. The Tahune Airwalk charges an entry fee and has a cafe. Open year-round with seasonal hours. The forest road beyond Geeveston is narrower than the Huon Valley roads - watch for oncoming traffic.
