The road
The opening stage of the Targa Wrest Point collection runs 27 kilometres down the Huon Valley from Huonville to the timber town of Geeveston. The road follows the Huon River for most of its length, a fast and flowing stage with excellent surface and minimal traffic outside of summer. The Huon Valley was settled for apple and pear orchards in the 1850s and remains one of the most productive fruit-growing regions in Australia. Geeveston was built around the timber industry and the Hartz Mountains behind it still carry old-growth forest above the logging boundary.
