The road
The Toodyay stage closes the Perth Hills collection at the historic convict-built town on the Avon River. The 2024 Tarmac West rally ran 'Toodyay' stages at 8.80 km and 'Coondle West' stages at 4.32-4.61 km in the same area, along with 'Dardanup Removals Racecourse' stages at 7.09 km. It is the busiest rally day of the event - 12 stages in the Toodyay area on the Saturday. Toodyay was built largely by convict labour in the 1850s and several original stone buildings survive on the main street. The Avon River flows through town and the valley below is wheat farming country - the eastern edge of the Swan Coastal Plain giving way to the Wheatbelt. The stages here are faster and more open than the escarpment roads in Kalamunda and Gooseberry Hill. Long straights on the valley floor connected by sweeping bends through flat agricultural land. Peter Brock died during the 2006 Targa West event near Gidgegannup, not far from the Toodyay stages - the event has a deep and sometimes difficult history in this part of the Hills.

Why this road

The region
Toodyay is one of WA's best preserved colonial towns, with several 19th-century stone buildings on the main street and the original police lock-up now serving as a museum. The Avon River flows through town. Toodyay was established in the 1830s as one of the earliest inland settlements in the Swan River Colony.

History
Toodyay was established in the 1830s as one of the earliest inland settlements in the Swan River Colony. Much of the original town was built by convict labour in the 1850s and 1860s. The Targa West rally has used Toodyay stages since the event's early years. Peter Brock's fatal crash during the 2006 event near Gidgegannup, 40 km south-west of Toodyay, remains one of Australian motorsport's most significant losses.
