The road is the main access to Australia's ski fields and is the most-used alpine road in the country, which means it is also the best maintained. The quality of the surface, the consistency of the corners, and the mountain scenery make it the strongest individual stage in the Snowy circuit. Above the treeline the snowgum woodland gives way to alpine heath and the views of the Main Range open up ahead. Charlotte Pass Village at the end is Australia's highest permanently inhabited settlement.
