The region

The Snowy River rises near Mount Kosciuszko and flows south through a deep gorge carved through granite and limestone country. The river was largely de-watered by the Snowy Scheme dams, and environmental flow restoration has been underway since the 1990s. Buchan in Victoria is the end point, known for its limestone cave systems.
