The road
The wildest stage in the Snowy circuit. Barry Way runs 170 kilometres from Jindabyne south through the Snowy River gorge country, crossing the Victorian border and eventually reaching Buchan. The first 27 kilometres from Jindabyne are sealed, passing through Moonbah and Grosses Plain before the road becomes unsealed at Ingebirah Gap. From there it remains unsealed through the gorge country and across the Victorian border where it becomes the Snowy River Road. The Snowy River gorge visible from the road is one of the deepest in New South Wales, the river cutting through limestone and sandstone far below. The Buchan Caves Reserve at the end of the stage contains some of Australia's most accessible limestone cave systems.
The wildest stage in the Snowy circuit.
Why this road

The region
The Snowy River rises near Mount Kosciuszko and flows south through a deep gorge carved through granite and limestone country. The river was largely de-watered by the Snowy Scheme dams, and environmental flow restoration has been underway since the 1990s. Buchan in Victoria is the end point, known for its limestone cave systems.

Before you go
Fuel in Jindabyne before departure. Sealed for 27km, then unsealed from Ingebirah Gap. Check road conditions after rain. Not suitable for low-clearance vehicles on the gravel sections. Buchan has fuel, accommodation and the caves complex. Open November to April for the alpine section.
