7-day forecast
Sharp sealed climb up the Beechmont Range with consistent corners and almost no traffic beyond the Canungra township. Sports car or motorbike both well suited - the road rewards rhythm driving and the surface is in good condition. The optional Binna Burra spur at the top is rougher and only worth doing for the lodge stop.
Scored 8.2/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for sports car drivers.
The road
Beechmont Road is the climb from Canungra up the Beechmont Range above the Gold Coast hinterland and one of the best short mountain roads in southeast Queensland. The 17-kilometre sealed road runs from the township of Canungra through cleared dairy country to Beechmont village at around 600 metres, with the corners tightening as the road climbs onto the ridge. The surface is in good condition and traffic is very light because the only destinations are Beechmont itself and the optional Binna Burra Lodge spur further on. The range sits between the Gold Coast hinterland and Lamington National Park, and from the ridge you get views east to the Gold Coast skyline on a clear day and west into the Lost World valley. From the southern end of Beechmont, the rougher Binna Burra Road drops into Lamington National Park to Binna Burra Lodge at 800 metres - the lodge has been operating as an eco-tourism guesthouse since 1933 and the cafe is worth the detour, but the road surface is patchier and the corners less consistent than the main Beechmont climb. The 24-kilometre Border Track from Binna Burra to O'Reilly's on the other side of the range is one of the best full-day walks in the region.

Why this road

The region
Beechmont Road runs along the Beechmont Range above Canungra, climbing through dairy country to the small ridge village of Beechmont at around 600 metres. The range sits between the Gold Coast hinterland and Lamington National Park - on a clear day you get views east to the Gold Coast and west into the Lost World valley. From Beechmont a short rougher spur (Binna Burra Road) drops into Lamington National Park to Binna Burra Lodge at 800 metres, which has been operating as an eco-tourism guesthouse since 1933.

Before you go
Fuel in Canungra before the climb. Road is sealed throughout and open year-round. Very light traffic - the only destinations along the road are Beechmont village and Binna Burra Lodge. The canopy keeps the upper sections damp. Beechmont has a small cafe and lookout at the top of the climb. The Binna Burra Lodge spur off the southern end is worth doing for the cafe but the corners are tighter and surface less consistent.

Binna Burra Lodge
Reached via the rougher Binna Burra Road spur off Beechmont. Operating since 1933, sits on the edge of the Lamington plateau. Good cafe, heritage buildings and a genuine sense of remoteness for a road so close to the Gold Coast.
Border Track to O'Reilly's
The 24km ridge track connecting Binna Burra to O'Reilly's on the other side of the range - one of the best full-day walks in SE Queensland. A two-car shuttle makes a one-way trip possible.
