The road
Zeka Spur Track is the Victorian High Country at maximum difficulty. The 9-kilometre track south of Mansfield climbs a narrow spur ridgeline through mountain ash into subalpine ash, with drop-offs on both sides that leave no margin for error. The difficulty rating of 5.0 and Recovery Risk Index of 5.67 place it at the top end of accessible High Country 4WD in the state. A locker is not technically mandatory but strongly recommended - the rocky sections on the spur crest require consistent traction that open differentials struggle to deliver. The terrain is steep, narrow and intermittently rocky, with sections where the track narrows to barely wider than a standard 4WD. Navigation is straightforward - the spur only goes one way - but the consequences of a problem are real. This is a track for experienced drivers with properly equipped vehicles and full recovery gear. The reward is a High Country experience that most visitors never see - the Mansfield corridor below the main alpine resorts, where the bush is thicker and the traffic is zero.
