The road
Whites Track is one of few 4WD options in the Glenelg River hinterland of southwest Victoria, a part of the state that most visitors overlook entirely in favour of the Great Ocean Road. The 10-kilometre track runs through stringybark forest and coastal heath near Portland, crossing river flat sections that provide the main technical challenge. The Glenelg River system here cuts through deep limestone gorges - Princess Margaret Rose Cave downstream is one of Victoria's finest cave systems. The coastal hinterland character of this track is distinctive - different from the alpine or mallee 4WD that dominates the Victorian track catalogue. High clearance is required and the river flat sections can be difficult after rain. The Portland district has surprising depth for a region most people just drive through - Cape Bridgewater's seal colony, Cape Nelson's lighthouse, and the volcanic coastline around Port Fairy are all within an hour.

Why this road

The region
The Glenelg National Park in southwest Victoria follows the Glenelg River from Harrow to the sea at Nelson. The river flows through deep limestone gorges - Princess Margaret Rose Cave is one of Victoria's finest cave systems, accessible from the park. The Portland hinterland around the lower Glenelg is a mix of stringybark forest, coastal heathland and the agricultural land of the Discovery Bay coast. Very few 4WD tracks penetrate this part of southwest Victoria.

Before you go
Fuel in Portland or Heywood. The southwest Victoria coast receives significant winter rainfall - avoid in wet conditions. Standard recovery kit appropriate. Check conditions with Parks Victoria.
