High difficulty track in the Glenelg NP coastal hinterland. Significant technical challenge on the river flat sections. High clearance and good ground clearance required. Good track for southwest Victoria where the choice of 4WD destinations is limited.

Scored 6.9/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for 4wd drivers.

The road

Whites Track is one of few 4WD options in the Glenelg River hinterland of southwest Victoria, a part of the state that most visitors overlook entirely in favour of the Great Ocean Road. The 10-kilometre track runs through stringybark forest and coastal heath near Portland, crossing river flat sections that provide the main technical challenge. The Glenelg River system here cuts through deep limestone gorges - Princess Margaret Rose Cave downstream is one of Victoria's finest cave systems. The coastal hinterland character of this track is distinctive - different from the alpine or mallee 4WD that dominates the Victorian track catalogue. High clearance is required and the river flat sections can be difficult after rain. The Portland district has surprising depth for a region most people just drive through - Cape Bridgewater's seal colony, Cape Nelson's lighthouse, and the volcanic coastline around Port Fairy are all within an hour.
