4WDBest suited profile

Moderate to high difficulty compact track with clay and seasonal wetland challenges. A good example of western Wimmera 4WD terrain - flat but with clay surface hazards.

Scored 4.5/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for 4wd drivers.

The road

Eagle Swamp Track is a compact 4WD route in the western Wimmera that teaches you more about Victoria's dry interior than most longer tracks manage. The track runs through grey box and buloke woodland on the pastoral fringe west of Horsham, crossing flat terrain that is deceptive in its difficulty. The clay surface in dry conditions is straightforward. After rain, the same surface becomes slippery enough to test even experienced drivers. The Eagle Swamp itself is a seasonal wetland - one of those low points in the drainage network that fills after significant winter rainfall and transforms the surrounding woodland into extraordinary waterbird habitat. The regent parrot, one of Australia's rarest parrots, breeds in this grey box woodland. The track is short enough to fit into a longer western Wimmera day trip that combines it with the Big Desert or Little Desert parks nearby.

The region

The western Wimmera plains between Horsham and the South Australian border are some of Victoria's driest farming areas. The Eagle Swamp is a seasonal wetland in the grey box woodland of the Wimmera's pastoral fringe - one of the low points in the drainage network that fills after significant winter rainfall. The grey box and buloke woodland here is critical habitat for the endangered regent parrot.
