7-day forecast
Long western Wimmera track with sandy and clay sections. Good length for an expedition feel. The difficulty comes from the surface variety and the distance involved. A capable stock 4WD with proper preparation handles this track well.
Recommended gear: Recovery boards, Snatch strap, Tyre deflator/inflator, Extra water.
The road
White Springs Track is one of the longer 4WD tracks in western Victoria and delivers the expedition feel that shorter tracks in the Wimmera can not match. The 15.5-kilometre route from the Kaniva district crosses sandy and clay sections through mallee scrub that transitions toward the SA border. The surface variety is what makes this track interesting - fine sand requiring tyre deflation gives way to sections of hardened clay before returning to sand. The White Springs themselves are a natural water source that sustained pastoral runs in the 19th century and remain a navigational landmark. The area is remote enough that self-reliance is not optional. The Murray-Sunset National Park surrounding the track protects one of Victoria's largest mallee ecosystems and the mallee-fowl mound sites along the track are evidence of the park's ecological significance. This is a track for drivers who want distance and solitude rather than technical difficulty - the challenge is in the length and the surface conditions rather than individual obstacles.

Why this road

The region
The Wimmera near Kaniva is the western fringe of Victoria's agricultural zone - the point where wheat and canola country transitions toward the mallee scrub of the Big Desert and the South Australian border. White Springs is a natural water source in this otherwise dry country - the kind of location that pastoral runs were built around in the 19th century. The springs give the track its name and mark a significant point in the area's droving history.

Before you go
Fuel in Kaniva. Long track - allow a full day. Good recovery preparation required. The area is remote enough that a problem requires self-reliance. Deflate tyres for sandy sections.
