7-day forecast
Range escarpment track with moderate difficulty. Less extreme than the Eastern Break but with similar remote character. High clearance 4WD is adequate in dry conditions.
Scored 7.0/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for 4wd drivers.
The road
Western Break sits on the inland face of the Queensland coastal ranges - the drier side that receives far less rainfall than the eastern slopes. The 10-kilometre track crosses from the range top toward the Darling Downs and western plains below through dry scrub and brigalow. The vegetation transition from tall open forest to dry inland scrub happens quickly and the terrain opens up as the range drops away. These tracks connect range-top properties to the plains and have been in use since pastoral settlement. The difficulty is moderate and a high-clearance 4WD handles the surface well in dry conditions. Main Range National Park nearby holds the volcanic peaks of the southern Queensland ranges and Cunninghams Gap is one of the best sealed mountain passes in the state.

Why this road

The region
The western faces of Queensland's coastal ranges are a different world from the lush eastern slopes. The inland side receives far less rainfall and the vegetation transitions quickly from tall open forest to dry scrub and brigalow. Break country on the western side tends to be drier, rockier and more open than eastern equivalents. These tracks connect range top properties to the Darling Downs and western plains below.
