Best in 4WD. Peak season: Year-round.
7-day forecast
Beach driving track requiring proper tyre deflation. The difficulty rating reflects tidal conditions, soft sand and the consequence of getting it wrong. Standard 4WD handles this well with properly deflated tyres. Do not attempt at high tide.
Recommended gear: Tyre deflator/inflator (mandatory), Recovery boards, Snatch strap, Shovel.
The road
Teewah Beach Road is pure Queensland beach 4WD - 17 kilometres along the surf on the Cooloola coast north of Noosa. The track runs along Teewah Beach inside the Cooloola Recreation Area, with the famous coloured sand cliffs rising on the inland side and the Pacific surf breaking on the other. The cliffs are eroded sandstone in bands of red, orange, yellow and white - one of the most distinctive geological features on the Queensland coast. Access is via the Noosa River vehicular ferry from Tewantin. Tyre deflation to 20 psi is mandatory before driving on sand. The critical variable is the tide - check tide times for both outward and return legs. At high tide, sections of the beach are impassable and vehicles have been caught by rising water. At low tide with properly deflated tyres, the surface is firm and a standard 4WD handles it well. Double Island Point lighthouse at the north end of the beach was built in 1884 and is one of the most photographed on the Queensland coast.
