The road

Eastern Break is a 17-kilometre range country track on the eastern face of the Queensland Great Dividing Range south of Brisbane. Break country in the ranges refers to the sharp escarpment edges where the tablelands drop toward the coast - the terrain creates steep gully drainage, exposed sandstone and tough eucalypt scrub on the upper faces. These tracks are used by station workers and rarely appear on tourist maps. The recovery risk is elevated by remoteness, so satellite comms are worth carrying. Girraween National Park nearby is one of Queensland's best walking destinations - enormous granite boulders balanced on the ridgeline in a landscape unlike anywhere else in the state. The Stanthorpe wine region on the Granite Belt produces Queensland's best cool-climate wines.
