Long mallee boundary track with consistent sandy challenge. Good length for a proper expedition feel without extreme remoteness. High difficulty reflects the sandy surface and minimal track maintenance.
Scored 2.4/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for 4wd drivers.
The road
West Boundary Track is a 17-kilometre mallee boundary track in the southeast SA mallee near Bordertown. The length is the point - this is long enough to give a proper expedition feel without the extreme remoteness of the far north tracks. The sandy surface is consistent throughout and tyre deflation is essential for the full distance. The landscape is the transition zone between agricultural land and the Ninety Mile Desert - one of Australia's most ironically named landscapes. The desert was brought into agricultural production from the 1950s by aerial topdressing with superphosphate, transforming the soil chemistry enough to support pasture. The mallee scrub on the uncleared country still holds the original landscape character: low multi-stemmed eucalypts over deep sand with remarkable lizard diversity. The track follows old fence lines, which makes navigation reasonably straightforward despite the lack of phone coverage. The sandy surface and minimal track maintenance produce a Grade 4 difficulty that reflects consistency rather than any single extreme obstacle. Bordertown is the base, and it has an oddity worth the stop: a free wildlife park in the town with albino kangaroos. Bool Lagoon Game Reserve is 30 minutes away and is one of Australia's most important wetland sites for migratory wading birds, listed under the Ramsar Convention.
