The road
The Gluepot-Taylorville Boundary Track is a 17.5-kilometre mallee track in the Riverland that doubles as access to one of the most important bird conservation areas in Australia. Gluepot Reserve is owned by BirdLife Australia and protects habitat for 170 bird species including the critically endangered regent honeyeater, malleefowl, and the black-eared miner. The landscape is deep red sand under multi-stemmed mallee eucalypt - visually repetitive to the casual eye but ecologically extraordinary. The reserve name comes from the gluey adhesive clay found in the dry creek lines, and that clay alternates with sand to produce a surface that demands tyre deflation and careful progress. The track follows the boundary between Gluepot Reserve and Taylorville Station, running through country that has no tourist infrastructure whatsoever. The absence of development is the point - this is genuine back-country SA where the mallee ecosystem has been left intact for the birds rather than cleared for pasture. The best birdwatching is in the cooler months from May through August, and the track conditions are also better in the dry season. Gluepot has a basic campsite that is accessible with a 4WD, but check BirdLife Australia's access conditions before visiting. Renmark on the Murray River is 40 minutes away with fuel, food and houseboat hire. The river red gum forests downstream from Renmark are excellent for canoeing.

Why this road

The region
Gluepot Reserve is owned by Birds Australia (BirdLife Australia) and is one of the country's most important conservation areas for mallee-dependent bird species. The mallee around the reserve is habitat for the regent honeyeater (critically endangered), malleefowl, black-eared miner and 168 other bird species. The landscape is deep red sand mallee eucalypt - visually repetitive but ecologically extraordinary. The reserve name comes from the gluey adhesive clay in the dry creek lines.

Before you go
Fuel in Waikerie or Renmark. Gluepot Reserve has a basic campsite - check Bird Australia access conditions before visiting. Deflate tyres for sandy sections. The area between the reserve and Taylorville is remote - carry ample water. Best birdwatching in cooler months, especially May through August.
