The road
The Vasse Highway between Pemberton and Nannup is the longest stage in the South West WA collection - 79 kilometres of sealed highway through jarrah and karri hardwood forest. The road is one of the main arterial connections in the South West, built originally for timber haulage, and it carries remarkably little traffic for a highway of this quality. The landscape transitions as you head north and west from Pemberton. The tall karri forest gives way to jarrah and marri woodland - lower, drier, more open. The highway passes Donnelly River Village and the turnoff to Karri Valley Resort before crossing into the jarrah country that characterises the inner South West. Nannup at the end of the stage is a historic timber town on the Blackwood River. The town has reinvented itself around wine, food and bush walking. The Nannup Flower and Garden Festival in October makes it one of the more seasonal South West destinations. Good coffee is easy to find.
