The road
The Weldborough Pass is one of the most atmospheric roads in Tasmania. The 13-kilometre stage runs south from Weldborough through cool-temperate rainforest on the Blue Tier, with myrtle beech draping over both sides of the road, the surface damp and dark even in summer, and corners arriving with minimal warning. The elevation ranges from 140 m to 597 m. The road climbs steadily from Weldborough, crests through dense rainforest, and the contrast between the dark forest on the pass and the surrounding cleared land is one of the most striking transitions in the Tasmania Tarmac collection. The Blue Tier was one of Tasmania's major tin-producing areas in the 1880s and the forest has reclaimed most of the workings.

Why this road

The region
The Blue Tier in Tasmania's northeast is a remnant plateau covered in cool-temperate rainforest. The area was mined for tin in the 1880s and the ruins of several mining operations are accessible on walking tracks from the road. Weldborough at the base of the pass is a small settlement with a famous pub that predates the road.

History
The Blue Tier was one of Tasmania's major tin-producing areas in the 1880s. At its peak the settlement at the top had a population of several hundred miners. The forest has reclaimed most of the workings.
Before you go
Fuel in Scottsdale before departure. The Weldborough Hotel is a genuine country pub worth stopping at. Road is open year-round but the surface is wet and can be mossy - allow for reduced grip. Mobile coverage is absent on the pass.
