The road

The Weldborough Pass is one of the most atmospheric roads in Tasmania. The 13-kilometre stage runs south from Weldborough through cool-temperate rainforest on the Blue Tier, with myrtle beech draping over both sides of the road, the surface damp and dark even in summer, and corners arriving with minimal warning. The elevation ranges from 140 m to 597 m. The road climbs steadily from Weldborough, crests through dense rainforest, and the contrast between the dark forest on the pass and the surrounding cleared land is one of the most striking transitions in the Tasmania Tarmac collection. The Blue Tier was one of Tasmania's major tin-producing areas in the 1880s and the forest has reclaimed most of the workings.
