7-day forecast
Consistently excellent sealed surface through Hunter Valley river country. The road follows the Paterson River with enough corners to keep it interesting and enough openness to enjoy the valley scenery. Sports car or motorbike is the right choice - EV works well too given the smooth surface.
Scored 5.4/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for sports car drivers.
The road
Paterson River Road is a 41-kilometre sealed route through the quietest corner of the Hunter Valley - not the wine region the tourists know, but the river country behind it. The road follows the Paterson River from the small town of Paterson to Dungog, keeping close to the water for most of its length. The corners are generated by the river meanders and have a natural flowing quality that rewards smooth driving. The surface is consistently excellent and the traffic is almost non-existent. Tocal Homestead near the start is a colonial property now used as an agricultural college - the homestead gardens are worth a look on open days. Dungog at the far end sits on the Williams River and serves as the gateway to the Barrington Tops forests. The combination of river scenery, smooth sealed surface and genuine solitude makes this road worth seeking out, even from Sydney - it is under three hours from the city and delivers a quality of driving that the Hunter Valley's wine roads cannot match.

Why this road

The region
The Paterson Valley sits between the Hunter Valley wine region and the Barrington Tops escarpment. The Paterson River drains north through agricultural country that sees very little traffic compared to the wine corridor further south. Tocal College (agricultural education) and the historic Tocal Homestead sit on the river near the start of the road.

Before you go
Fuel in Paterson or Dungog - both small towns with basic services. Road is sealed throughout and open year-round. Very light traffic. The road follows river meanders so corners are frequent but not tight - good flow road. Allow 25 minutes end to end.
