The road
Old Coach Road is a preserved 19th-century coach route near Batchelor south of Darwin - a glimpse of how overland travel worked in the Territory before the railway. The 5.5-kilometre track connected Palmerston (now Darwin) to the Pine Creek gold mining area in the 1880s. Before the railway opened in 1889, horse-drawn coaches used this route as the Territory's only overland connection to the goldfields. The surface is moderate and an average 4WD handles it without drama in dry conditions. This is a good entry-level NT track for drivers who want to get off the sealed road without committing to a full outback expedition. Litchfield National Park is 20 minutes from Batchelor with waterfalls and swimming holes accessible on a combined day trip.
