The road
The Bunyeroo Valley connects the Blinman Road (about 9 km north of Wilpena) to the Brachina Gorge road via a 25-kilometre gravel route through the western face of the Flinders Ranges. The valley is wider and more open than the gorge stages - yellow spinifex and grey-green saltbush on the flat sections, quartzite ridges of the Heysen and ABC Ranges rising sharply on both sides. The Bunyeroo road surface is smoother than the Brachina Gorge road, making this the easier section of the loop. Yellow-footed rock wallabies are common in this area and visible from the road in the early morning. The Razorback Lookout partway along the road is one of the best viewpoints in the Flinders Ranges. The valley forms part of the Bunyeroo-Brachina-Aroona scenic drive, a 110-kilometre loop from the Wilpena area that is one of the classic Flinders Ranges day drives.

Why this road

The region
The Bunyeroo Valley is part of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. The valley was grazed by Merino sheep from the 1850s and the damage to the native vegetation was extensive - the national park has been revegetating since the 1970s. Yellow-footed rock wallabies were nearly extinct in the Flinders by the 1970s and are now recovering.

Before you go
