The road
The Valley of the Giants Road runs 17 kilometres from Walpole to one of the most impressive forest destinations in Australia. The red tingle trees at the Valley of the Giants are found nowhere else in the world - they grow only in a small area of the WA south coast between Walpole and Nornalup, reaching up to 24 metres in girth at the base and living for 400 years. The road itself passes through tall karri forest before entering the tingle zone in the final kilometres. The transition from karri to tingle is visible in the tree form - tingle trees have enormous buttressed bases that flare outward from the trunk, creating hollow cavities at ground level that are large enough to walk through. The Tree Top Walk at the Valley of the Giants is a 40-metre elevated steel walkway through the crown of the tingle forest, giving a perspective on the canopy that is impossible from the ground. Walpole at the start of the road sits on the Walpole Inlet, part of a large estuary system that offers good fishing and quiet water. The town is small and low-key - the kind of place where you can park, walk to the inlet, and be in genuine wilderness within five minutes. The drive to the Valley of the Giants gives the trip a purpose beyond the road, which is something that matters when you are trying to convince someone else in the car.
