The road
Del Park Road traces the edge of the Darling Scarp through 40 kilometres of jarrah and marri forest between North Dandalup and Dwellingup. The Darling Scarp is the long low escarpment that separates the Swan Coastal Plain from the interior plateau, and the road navigates the transition zone where the land drops steeply from the jarrah plateau to the plain below. The corner sequences on this road are sustained rather than spectacular - long flowing bends through the forest rather than tight hairpins. The elevation changes through the escarpment country add a vertical dimension that most Perth-region roads lack entirely. Light traffic on weekdays makes this one of the more reliable roads to drive without interruption. The jarrah forest through here is fire-prone in summer - the December to March period can see total fire bans that close access to the forest. Outside of fire season the road is reliable year-round. Dwellingup at the northern end is the base for the Munda Biddi Trail, a long-distance cycling route through the jarrah, and the town has good provisions for a day trip. Combined with Nanga Brook Road, Del Park Road makes a satisfying Peel region circuit that covers the best of the Darling Range jarrah country.
