The road
Maranup Ford Road runs 16 kilometres north from Bridgetown through farming country that transitions into tall jarrah and marri forest - two of the signature hardwoods of the WA south-west. The road is sealed throughout and carries so little traffic that you can drive the whole thing without seeing another vehicle on a weekday. Bridgetown sits in the Blackwood River valley, one of the most pleasant small towns in WA. The town has reinvented itself around the annual Blues Festival, good food and the kind of quietly confident country-town character that makes people move here on purpose. The road north from town climbs through apple orchards and cleared pastoral land before entering the Bridgetown Jarrah Park forest, where the trees close in and the road character changes completely. The best season for this road is spring - August through October - when the WA south-west wildflower season brings native orchids, banksias and grevilleas to the road verges. The Blackwood River below the town is one of WA s better canoeing rivers, with hire available in Bridgetown. The combination of the drive, the river and the town makes this a genuine weekend destination rather than just a road.
