7-day forecast
Open flat sealed road across the Cox Peninsula. Not a driver's road - the appeal is the remoteness and the barramundi fishing community at Fog Bay. EV does well here in dry season. Avoid the wet season when sections can become inaccessible.
Scored 8.2/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for sports car drivers.
The road
Fog Bay Road crosses the Cox Peninsula west of Darwin - a 51-kilometre sealed road to one of the Territory's classic barramundi fishing destinations. The Peninsula sits directly across Darwin Harbour from the city but despite being 25 km away by water, it has almost no development. The road runs through open Top End savanna and mangrove coast to the tidal flats at Fog Bay, where the barra fishing is world class. The Mandorah Ferry from Darwin provides access. This is not a driver's road - it is a destination road through country that feels genuinely remote despite its proximity to the Territory's capital. The barramundi lodge at Fog Bay takes bookings for charter boats working the tidal flats. Crocs are present in all coastal and tidal areas.

Why this road

The region
The Cox Peninsula sits directly across Darwin Harbour from the city - accessible by a short ferry from Darwin. Despite being just 25 km from Darwin by water, the Peninsula has almost no development. Fog Bay itself is a small barramundi fishing community at the peninsula's western tip, where the Fog Bay tidal flats are some of the most productive barra habitat in the Territory.

Before you go
The Mandorah Ferry runs from Darwin (short crossing). Fuel at Mandorah - nothing further along the road. Sealed throughout. Open year-round but wet season (November to March) brings flooding risk. Mobile coverage is limited on the peninsula. Barramundi fishing is world class at Fog Bay - the lodge takes bookings. Crocs are present in all coastal and tidal areas.
