7-day forecast
Tight sealed road through Lamington National Park with consistent corners and very little traffic. Sports car or motorbike are the right tools - the road rewards rhythm driving. The surface is in good condition but canopy moisture keeps many sections damp. Some exposed ridge sections give good views before the forest closes in.
Scored 8.2/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for sports car drivers.
The road
Binna Burra Road is the eastern approach to Lamington National Park and one of the best mountain roads in southeast Queensland. The 28-kilometre sealed road climbs from Canungra to 900 metres on the Macpherson Range through World Heritage Gondwana rainforest that has survived relatively intact since the breakup of the supercontinent. The corners are tight and constant through the national park section, with the canopy closing overhead and the understorey thick enough to feel fully enclosed. The road ends at Binna Burra Lodge, which has been operating since 1933 and is one of Australia's oldest eco-tourism destinations. Traffic is very light beyond Canungra because the road ends at the lodge - nobody drives this road by accident. The 24-kilometre Border Track connects Binna Burra to O'Reilly's on the other side of the range and is one of the best full-day walks in the region. A two-car shuttle makes a one-way walk possible. The road rewards rhythm driving - the corners link together with a consistency that makes the climb feel shorter than it is.

Operating since 1933, the lodge sits on the edge of the Lamington plateau. Good cafe, heritage buildings and a genuine sense of remoteness for a road so close to the Gold Coast.
