FAQ
Common questions.
How Contour scores roads, navigates, handles 4WD tracks, and what's included in each plan.

What we know about every road
40+ signals per road.
Every road gets a full profile. Quality score, crash risk, safety flags. For tracks: difficulty grade, recovery risk, water crossings, vehicle suitability. Not just 'is this road curvy?' - 'is this road right for you?'
How it works
How is a road score calculated?
The road quality score looks at curviness, surface quality, speed limit range, traffic density, elevation change, and road class. Each vehicle profile weights these differently. But the score is one layer - Contour also screens for crash risk, grades track difficulty for offroad routes, calculates recovery risk if something goes wrong, and incorporates live condition reports from other drivers. Over 40 data signals go into the full intelligence profile for every 500 metres of road.
What makes Contour different from a road rating app?
Most driving apps give you one number based on how curvy a road is. Contour builds a full intelligence profile per road - quality score, crash risk screening, safety flags, and for tracks: difficulty grade, recovery risk, water crossings, vehicle suitability. It's not just 'is this road twisty?' - it's 'is this road right for you, today, in your vehicle?'
Why does the same road score differently for different vehicles?
Because what makes a great road depends on what you're driving. A gravel road that's ideal for a 4WD is a poor choice for an EV. A tight mountain road that scores maximum for a motorbike might score lower for an EV that needs smooth surface. Contour applies different factor weights for each vehicle profile.
How current is the road data?
OSM data is updated regularly. Elevation data is static (NASA SRTM). Mobile coverage is updated quarterly. Community condition reports are live and expire after 24-48 hours.
Which states does Contour cover?
All 8 Australian states and territories are live. Every road scored with 40+ data signals per segment.
Navigation
Does Contour do the navigation itself?
No. Contour is a planning layer - it finds the best roads and builds a route. Navigation is handed off to Google Maps with the waypoints pre-loaded. You navigate with Google Maps as you normally would.
How many waypoints does Contour add?
Depends on your route and the roads available. Contour groups nearby high-scoring segments and picks one representative per cluster - so you get the best roads, not just the most waypoints.
What happens if no great roads are found?
Contour returns the direct route with a note that no high-scoring roads were found in the corridor. You still get the Google Maps URL - just without the scenic detours.
Can I use Contour offline?
The mobile app supports offline map downloads (MapLibre tiles for the map view). Route planning requires internet. Navigation within Google Maps works offline if you've downloaded the area.
4WD tracks
What's the Recovery Risk Index?
A score from 0-10 based on how far you'd be from a sealed road if your vehicle broke down, plus mobile coverage at the track location. High RRI doesn't mean don't go - it means go prepared with appropriate communications and recovery gear.
How accurate is the mobile coverage data?
Coverage is classified as covered / partial / none using ACMA data. It's advisory only - actual coverage varies with terrain, carrier, and handset. Always carry a PLB or satellite communicator on remote tracks regardless of what the map shows.
How are track difficulty ratings determined?
Primarily from OSM tracktype grades (grade1-grade5) combined with community condition reports. Grade 1 is well-maintained gravel; grade 5 is rough, barely passable track. Condition reports temporarily adjust the effective difficulty.
