Recommended gear: Recovery boards, Snatch strap, Hi-lift jack.

The road

Montgomerys Road is another black soil plains track in the border country between NSW and Queensland - the kind of terrain that generates its reputation entirely through surface conditions. The 8-kilometre track near St George runs through the Balonne River basin on clay and gravel. In dry conditions a capable 4WD handles it comfortably. After rain, the clay surface becomes some of the most challenging in Australia. The Darling Downs black cracking clay here is notoriously adhesive - wheels pack solid, recovery boards disappear into the surface, and progress can stop completely. The surrounding landscape is flat cotton and wheat country with a strong outback character. St George on the Balonne River is a working cotton town with a good main street. Goondiwindi across the Queensland border is 30 minutes north with the Macintyre Brewery making it worth the crossing.
