Good paved surface through the Adelaide Hills with a mix of open valleys and tighter creek-line sections. Sports car or motorbike both find enough corners to stay engaged. Lighter traffic than the main Hills routes. EV is comfortable here given the good surface.
Scored 8.2/10 by Contour's road quality algorithm across curviness, surface, elevation and traffic. Best suited for sports car drivers.
The road
Bull Creek Road is the quiet alternative to the main Adelaide Hills tourist routes. The 26-kilometre run between Hahndorf and Balhannah passes through the core of the Hills wine and orchard country without the weekend traffic that clogs Hahndorf's main street or the commuter pressure on Greenhill Road. The road has two distinct characters. The southern half near Hahndorf runs through open valley country with vineyard rows visible on the hillsides and cellar door signs marking the turnoffs. The northern half narrows and drops into creek-line sections where river red gums overhang the road and the corners tighten. Bull Creek itself is one of several tributaries feeding the Onkaparinga River, and the road follows its course for a few kilometres through shaded bends that feel removed from the vineyards above. Hahndorf at the southern end is worth the stop it demands. Founded in 1839 by Prussian Lutheran immigrants fleeing religious persecution, it is the oldest surviving German settlement in Australia. The stone buildings on the main street are original and the food reflects the heritage without being a theme park. The Hahndorf Inn has been operating since 1863. Balhannah at the northern end is a smaller, quieter Hills town with a general store that does proper coffee and stocks local produce. The road between the two is sealed throughout, the surface is good, and the traffic is light enough mid-week to make the corners genuinely enjoyable.
