The road

7 Hills Track sits in the Mossman and Daintree hinterland of Far North Queensland - the inland fringe of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The 11.5-kilometre track climbs through the transition zone where sugar cane gives way to tropical rainforest on the lower slopes of the range. The red clay surface is characteristic of FNQ and the creek crossings require good clearance. This country receives extraordinary rainfall in the wet season - over 4,000mm in some locations - and the track is only safely driven in the dry season from May to October. The Daintree Rainforest north of Mossman is one of the world's oldest surviving tropical rainforests and the ferry crossing at the Daintree River is 30 minutes from the track. Mossman Gorge offers cultural walks with the Kuku Yalanji people and some of the best freshwater swimming in the tropics.

The region

The hills country between Mossman and the Daintree range is on the inland fringe of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The tablelands here are used for sugar cane and tropical fruits on the lower slopes with rainforest transition at the higher elevations. The area receives extraordinary rainfall in the wet season - over 4,000mm in some locations - which shapes the red clay soil and creek drainage that define the 4WD challenge.

Before you go

Fuel in Mossman or Port Douglas. Dry season strongly recommended - FNQ wet season rainfall makes clay tracks impassable and dangerous. High clearance essential for the creek crossings. Good mobile coverage from higher points.
