Best driving roads in south-east Queensland

Updated · 3 roads

South-east Queensland's best driving clusters on the Scenic Rim and D'Aguilar ranges, both within an hour of Brisbane. These three roads carry the region's top RQS scores and give a full day of varied driving if linked together.

All three are sealed and accessible to passenger vehicles. Timing matters - weekend afternoons bring tourist traffic to Lamington, and summer storms (December to March) wash debris across the range roads.

  1. The headline D'Aguilar climb. West of Brisbane through eucalypt forest to the Mount Nebo ridge. Tight, technical, quiet early mornings. Pairs with Mount Glorious Road for a full circuit.

  2. The climb to O'Reilly's. Long ascent through rainforest with shifting surface quality. Not technical in the sense of the Sydney roads but a proper Sunday drive with good cafes at the top.

  3. The northern arm of the D'Aguilar loop. Pairs with Mount Nebo Road for a 90-minute circuit from the city. Popular with locals; arrive early to have it mostly to yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do all three in a day?+

Not comfortably. Mount Nebo and Mount Glorious pair as a half-day loop. Lamington National Park Road is a separate run south of the city and deserves its own morning.

Are these motorcycle-friendly?+

Yes. All three score 8+ for motorcycles on the upper sections. Mount Nebo in particular is a classic local ride.
